Cosmetic injectables FAQs

What is botulinum toxin, such as Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®?

Although there are different brands of botulinum toxin, they all have the same function: relaxing facial muscles. This smooths away negative facial expressions, and gives you a more rejuvenated and youthful appearance.

Research indicates that the majority of people who undertake cosmetic procedures experience an improvement in self-esteem, though nonetheless it’s important to have realistic expectations before any wrinkle filler treatments.

Which botulinum toxin is used at Rubywaxx?

Xeomin® is the next generation wrinkle treatment, as it is the only purified wrinkle treatment available today and is free from complexing proteins.

Complexing proteins are formed during the fermentation process of every botulinum toxin (Botox®,Dysport® and Xeomin®). However, they are surplus and have no therapeutic benefits – and in some cases they can lead to antibody formation and secondary treatment failure.

What’s more, it has been found that the body can become immune to regular Botox® - but this doesn’t happen with Xeomin®.

During the Xeomin® manufacturing process, an extra step is added to remove these complexing proteins, leaving only purified, naked toxin. For this reason, at Rubywaxx we use and recommend Xeomin®.

Xeomin® was developed in Germany in 2005 by Merz Pharmaceuticals.

What's the difference between Xeomin®/Botox® and dermal fillers?

Xeomin®(Botox®) is used for relaxing the muscles on the face, and for minimising frown lines and forehead wrinkles. Dermal fillers are quite different; they're used when people lose volume in their face and need plumping up to look more youthful. Fillers are also used for lip augmentation treatments (or lip fillers), face fillers, cheek fillers, and under eye fillers. Collectively, Botox®and dermal fillers are known as "cosmetic injectables".

Is there anything you should do (or avoid) prior to a treatment?

Nothing prior to treatment for Xeomin®or Botox®, but it is best if you are having fillers, to stop any fish oils, or flax oils that you are taking at least 1 week before treatment (preferably 2 weeks) because these can cause bruising which in turn can take about 2 weeks to settle.

Is there any downtime after the treatment?

After Xeomin®or Botox®treatments, we don't like you to rub the area or lie down for about 4 hours. Although the relaxing agent leaves your body within 3 hours, we like to be safe and ensure everything stays where we put it.

Will cosmetic injectables make my face look ‘frozen’?

The ‘frozen’ look is a result of the over-injection of fillers, rather than Xeomin®or Botox®injections. At 2 weeks, if you have Xeomin®or Botox®, injected into your forehead, for example, you won't move in that area, but it gradually wears off and you begin to move about 2 weeks after that. No one seems to notice, much like if a man shaves off his beard, people notice he looks different but not quite what has happened. Similarly, with cosmetic injectables, if they are done correctly, you just look fresher and more relaxed.

Are there any benefits to starting treatments while you’re young and don’t have many wrinkles?

Everyone is different, and some people may need to start earlier than others, but by the time you’re in your 30s, most people can benefit from an enhancement with a wrinkle filler. However, it’s entirely up to the individual.
