Brazilian wax FAQs

What is a Brazilian wax?

A Brazilian wax is an extreme bikini wax: all the hair underneath is removed, and most of (or all) the wax on the front.

Why do people get Brazilian waxes?

Whatever your reason for getting a Brazilian wax, you can relax knowing we’ve done thousands of Brazilian waxes in Auckland over the past 20 years.

Does Brazilian hair removal hurt?

As much as we’d like to say it doesn’t hurt, it does. The first Brazilian wax will be the most painful, as there’s the most hair, and it will hurt every time you have a wax. The good news is that the pain is short and sharp, and by the time you’re back home or back at work, the pain will be gone.

If you’re worried about pain, then we suggest you take a painkiller an hour or so before your appointment.

Also, don’t have a wax a week before and during your period, as you could experience more pain than usual.

Is it embarrassing?

Whilst you will need to strip off (we can’t wax you with your knickers on!), the embarrassment factor will be at a minimum. In some other waxing places they still make you kneel on all fours, or wrap your legs round the beautician’s neck, but we’ve got a far less embarrassing technique.

Remember, we’re professionals and have been doing this for many years, and will do our best to relax you and put you at ease. Quite simply, you don’t have anything we haven’t seen before!

What’s the difference between a Brazilian wax and a Hollywood wax?

The terms are often used inter-changeably, but technically a Hollywood wax leaves the whole area bare, while a Brazilian wax leaves a small, vertical strip – often referred to as a ‘landing strip’.

We’ll discuss which style you’d like before your first wax. We’d normally remove hair from your labia and buttocks – please let us know if you don’t want this.

Can’t I just do it myself?

No, we strongly recommend against DIY Brazilian waxing. This is a very painful area, plus it’s hard to reach, so there’s a good chance that if you do it yourself it will be extremely painful and you’ll end up with ugly purple bruising.

  • Organic strip wax: this comes with our world-famous 15-minute Guarantee for monthly treatments.
  • Hot wax: ideal for first-timers or people who just prefer it.

How long will my Brazilian wax last?

The wax will last 3 to 4 weeks, and we recommend that you are waxed at 4-week intervals. This will make the waxing procedure a lot quicker, and significantly less painful!

Are there any side effects? Or will I be de-sensitised ‘down there’?

It’s common to have some redness immediately after the wax, but this will be gone by the following morning. You won’t be de-sensitised – quite the opposite in fact. Which is good news for any bedroom antics, but it will mean that every wax will hurt just as much.

Hints and tips for your Brazilian wax appointment…

  • The first time you have the treatment will be the most painful, as there’s the most hair. You might want to wear loose clothing so you’re more comfortable afterwards.
  • If you’ve been shaving, wait a while for the hair to re-grow: the hair needs to be long enough for the wax to work.
  • If you’re worried about pain, then we suggest you take a painkiller an hour or so before your appointment.
  • Don’t have a wax a week before and during your period, as the pain will be more than usual!
  • No hot baths or showers for 24 hours afterwards.
  • No sunbeds, sun exposure or fake tans for 24 hours afterwards.
  • Baby powder can be used to soothe newly-waxed or irritated skin.
  • Ingrown hairs can be treated with daily application of PFB Vanish

Why use PFB Vanish?

At Rubywaxx we’ve tried various brands of ingrown hair removal products – and PFB Vanish is our firm favourite.

There’s even a version of PFB Vanish that can help with skin discolouration, and that fights bumps on your skin.

PFB Vanish is available from Rubywaxx clinics, or you can buy it from us online.

Are there any other options?

If you’re feeling brave, you might like to try our speciality: the Rubywaxx! Once we’ve removed the unwanted hair, we then dye your remaining hair in your choice of colour.Select from the Fudge paint box colours: yellow, green, blue, pink, red, purple or orange.

Are Brazilian waxes for women only?

Right now, at Rubywaxx we only do women’s Brazilian waxes. Sorry, guys! We will hopefully be able to offer men’s Brazilians in the near future.

Can I have a permanent Brazilian wax?

Yes, you can be smooth forever – with Brazilian IPL / Laser hair removal! Perfect if you’re fed up with waxing, as you can now have those pesky pubes zapped with minimal pain, yet the results will last for years.

IPL (intense pulsed light) can reduce hair from this delicate area and has the benefit of no more ingrown hairs.

The hair is removed by controlled flashes of light, which is absorbed by the hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin.

It’s the pigment in the hair shaft that absorbs the light. The resulting heat damages each follicle and disables it. The dead hair shaft appears to grow and then fall out: this may take a week or more.

The number of treatments depends on skin and hair type, colour and thickness. Most people require between 5 and 8 Brazilian IPL sessions.

Treatments should be at 4-week intervals, to treat hairs at all stages of the growth cycle. Find out more about IPL / Laser hair removal.
